Re: [Philmont]: Suture Kit

I suspect that this topic is going to generate a lot of messages...

I know of crews that carried epi-pens for the scouts/adults who had never
been stung by bees and other insects that could cause alergic reactions...

The remoteness of some of the Philmont camps intimidates many of us who are
used to picking up a phone and knowing that help is minutes away. The
ex-philmont staffers should join in here, but I estimate that help is at
least 3-6 hours away from most backwoods locations at Philmont (on
average)...
This would cause the cautious adults to take extra items in our first aid
kits. I couldn't think of anything more fustrating to a Physician on the
trail who has the necessary skills, but not the right tools to assist the
injured party? Does the remoteness of the camps justify expanding your
first aid kits from lunch box size to that of a duffle bag? (what does a
portable defribulator weigh these days).

As adults, we need to focus on minimizing injuries by practicing and
promoting safe techniques - Plenty of training and practice hikes, No night
time hiking, proper hydration, etc - Should I assume that most of you know
that a large percentage of injuries happen at the campsite, not on the trail
(youth will always find an excuse to fool around). I've always known that
most scouts are resourceful - Closed foam sleeping pads and duct tape make a
great splint. How about the sewing kits we bring along with our personal
gear? could that be used to sew someone up? It's not sterile, but the
conditions in which we're tending to the wound aren't much better...

I was actually surprised that our 1st aid kit wasn't inspected when we hit
the trail in 2002

I am part of a contingent heading out in late July. One of the advisors in
our group is a physician and would like to bring a suture kit with him. I
was wondering if anyone has dealt with this situation, and what
authorization, if any, he would need from Philmont.
