I know I am late jumping in on this. I just got back from summer
camp. (Great week!)
I have a personal tent that I have owned since 1977. It is a large Eureka
Alpine tent A-frame, 10x8. This is not a backpacking tent by any stretch
of the imagination. The floor is very heavy duty. I never used a ground
cloth in the early years I owned the tent...but now I wish I had. There
are a number of small holes in the floor. This tent has been set up on
most every terrain that you can describe.
Yes, small pebbles and sticks will cause abrasion. Eventually they will
wear through. Philmont terrain is not will groomed, and you will find that
using Phil tents week after week will wear them out. If you take your own
tents, you are still opening yourself up to a puncture despite all caution
that you take. But then that your tent and who else cares.
I guess that if you choose your campsite with a lot of care, rake the
ground well, set up carefully, and only go into the tent to sleep, then you
will be fine.
My tent, is really a living room when I travel. I use it to avoid hotel
fees. I spend a lot of hours in it over a week's time. After this last
week of BSA summer camp, I think I am ready to replace it. But is only 27
years old and I hate to throw out old friends. (Sigh!)
