For airline travel, my crew is using either 1) army duffle bags (a tight
fit for most backpacks, but has worked in the past); or 2) some other kind
of large duffle bag. At least three of the crew have hockey equipment
bags that they are using.
My experience with recent air travel is that bags may be opened up and
inspected, but not always. If they have been opened, as far as I know, it
has been in my presence, but I think they have the right to open one
outside of my presence. It depends on the particular airport, I think,
based on travel experience through three airports in the past month. When
they have opened the bags, the usual reason seems to be that they cannot
see something in the x-rays because some part of the travel bag is
blocking their view. It would not surprise me to see them open up a bag
to take a look at pocket knives, walking sticks, or something else that
they may be interested in taking a look at.
The general consensus in our crew is that we will not be locking our bags.
