Just a heads up for those flying to New Mexico for their treks. Because of
the predominance of metal shanks or parts in most types of shoes, most of
the major airport's security screeners are requesting that folks remove
shoes and send them through the X-ray machines to keep the process from
bottle necking when alarms go off as you pass through the metal detectors. I
even encountered this on a recent trip to and from Atlanta and as I
typically travel in sandals was not asked to remove my shoes like most folks
were. As a side note, you are not required to remove shoes before walking
through the metal detector but "encouraged". An article appeared in the
paper on this subject the other day and the security person who was
interviewed suggested folks make sure that they travel in "airport friendly"
shoes.
I would venture that most camp shoes folks will be using at Philmont, such
as sneakers, sandals, or moccasins, have no major metal components so you
might insist everyone wear those and pack the boots in the packs. Those
wearing their hiking boots will surely slow the travel process down.
Oh, and don't forget to pack those knives in the checked bags!
