I recall seeing campers board the bus heading to Raton to catch the train.
Call Philmont and they can fill you in on the details for shuttling from
the Raton RR station to P2. 505-376-2281
As to boots, each person is going to have to find a boot that suits them.
I've known people who hike in tennis shoes and never had a problem. With
me and my artritic ankle, I have to have a boot. The sturdier the boot,
the more the breakin time is going to be.
If you feel you need a good sturdy boot go to your local gear store. Ask
the sales clerk about torsional rigidity. If he looks at you funny, you
may want to find another store. A boot with good torsional rigidity is
what keeps your feet from getting tired as easily. You test this by
picking up the boot, putting one hand on the toe, and one on the heel.
Then you try to twist it. Your tennis shoes are an excellent example of
somemthing without torsional rigidity. The reason this has to do with
your feet getting tired is as you walk over roots, rocks, and what not
your foot muscles have to mold your foot around the objects. A full day
of this will make your feet more tired. A boot with a sturdy sole (such
as Vibram) will hold its shape better. A boot with good torsional
rigidity will keep your foot in place and reduce sprains and strains. Now
all of this comes with the added price of weight.
I say this because the Hi Techs don't offer much in the way of torsional
rigidity. They twist like a pair of high tops. But they are light. And
light hiking boots can give you more miles out of your day. Its a trade
off. I know people who swear by their Hi Techs.
Bottom line, find out what you need in a boot and be happy with the fit.
