RE: [Philmont]: Post 9/11 air travel --Hiking boots

In rereading my original post I'd have to agree I was having a mental lapse.
I would agree that checking boots should not be done for the obvious stated
reasons. In 44 years of flying around the country and the world I have never
had a lost or misdirected piece of luggage, so I guess I am lucky. We do
teach scouts in our Council who are doing the Council contingent thing to
have a boot check prior to boarding the buses but they are not required to
wear them on the bus just show they have them.

Unfortunately the airlines have made it harder by limiting the carryon
baggage you can bring so wearing "airport friendly" shoes and putting your
boots in your carryon might not be an option. I would only warn folks to be
prepared for some delays at the airport if they are wearing their boots as
it will take time to lace them down and up, etc. and the delays will be more
likely at major hubs. Also it is generally a good idea to carry on any
medications for the same reasons.
