We have this "discussion" about the merits of cell phones periodicaly.
I'll try to summarize...

1) Reception is awful to non-existent in the account, but
sometimes possible at high elevations.
2) Using them to call work or home doesn't contribute to a "wilderness
experience".
3) They have on several occasions proven useful in emergencies, but
certainly certainly should not be relied on for that.
4) don't call 911 in an emergency, call Philmont base camp (the #s in
your "Guidebook to Adventure".
