Our contingent went on Trek 22 last year, 718-0, 2002. (Vaca, Deer Lake,
UteSprings, Lambert Mine, Mt. Phillips, Porcupine, Beaubien, Abreu, Miners
Park, in over the TOT).
We really enjoyed the itinerary. What worked best was: the best staff camps
were later in the trek... this gave us a lot to look foward to while
trodding up Mt. Phillips. We were very pleasantly surprised at all the
"extra" staffed camp activities we did along the way, but not on the
official itinerary, such as: Black Powder, Hunting Lodge, Spar Pole
Climbing, Burro racing, Cow and Goat milking, etc.
Catch the Burro races and Skeet shooting at Harlan while you camp at Vaca,
only a mile or so away.
I would not recommend water at Deer Lake, pack it in.
We cooked and ate dinner before climbing Mt. Phillips at Lambert's mine, and
ate lunch as the evening meal. This lightened the water and food load for
the big climb.
Take your time at Window Rock, probably the best view of the trip except
maybe from Mt. Phillips.
Lambert's mine camp was very full, get there early for a good campsite.
(Maybe not as crowded this year without the North Country closure)
Our only shower on the trek was at Abreu, it was very welcomed and was
something to look forward to.
We were too late for Black Powder at Clear Creek, but found Black Mtn.
offered it near Beaubien also. Not near as busy and more relaxed. We did
this hike instead of climbing the mountain to see a few pieces of aluminum
from the plane crash. I think we made the right decision.
Get an EARLY start from Miner's Park for the hike in. This will give you
more time to relax in base camp and avoid some of the afternoon heat. It
will be hot and dry, but the goal will keep you going.
Happy trails!
