A pair of our college Assistant Scoutmasters, Creighton Welch (aka
Bubba) and Byron Davis (aka Stick Boy) are Philmont Rangers this summer.
Creighton's father spoke with him Monday morning and here is his report.
I know that the opening staff banquet was held last night so the "scatter"
by staffers will begin soon if that process hasn't already started.

Then he drove up to Raton to look around and spend the night. Parked next to him at the Comfort Inn was a vehicle with a Trinity University decal on it. The boy, who Creighton didn't really know, is from Houston, and will be a staffer in the Philmont Motor Pool this summer. Creighton and Byron have adjoining tents in Staff City. Creighton's tentmate is from North Carolina. He says the tents are nice: concrete floors, nice lockers. Sunday night it was down in the mid 40s, but warmed up quickly. On Monday morning, it was about 42 degrees at Base Camp. Warms up into the upper 70s, lower 80s during the day, at about 17 percent humidity. All the backcountry staff crews were still in base camp, as of Monday morning when Creighton called, so he said Philmont was bustling with about 800 staffers. There are six other Rangers in Creighton's team. The spent all day Monday in meetings at Base Camp.
