[Philmont]: Philmont Update

I just returned from Philmont this evening, after dropping off some of our
Crew members for summer staff. It appears that it has been a good winter, with
lots of snow. Both Touch me not and Baldy still have snow on them. I did not
make it over to Mount Phillips (Clear Creek for the old timers on the list),
so I don't know what it's status is. The creeks are all flowing very strong.
The creeks at Baldy Town and French Henry were moving quickly, with lots of
waterfalls. Ponil Creek was also flowing very strong were it crosses the
highway near Cimmaron. The creek at Miranda was full, and moving quickly also.
The Rayado was also moving lots of water where it crosses the highway. Many
areas of the backcountry are very green due to the moisture. We even had a
little snow and hail falling above 10,000 feet on Saturday evening. Evenings were
very cool, around 40 or so. Days were beautiful, with no clouds and blue
skies.

I saw some of the burned areas north of Ponil, and they are recovering
nicely. Since many of the trees are no longer growing, the grass and brush are
starting to grow. The Elk and Mule Deer are in abundance in these areas, feasting
on the new growth. I also went up into the Valle, and saw many of the
severely burned areas from 2002. They are also recovering nicely.

The Staff is working hard to get ready for the first crews. They are
spending their days training, and preparing equipment. Based on what I saw, there
are some excellent staff members on the roster this year. I even had the
opportunity to visit with the ranger who served on our trek back in 2001. I am
disappointed that we did not get selected for a trek this year. I hope each of
you who attend this year enjoy your trip.
