Good morning to the members of Crews 812E1 & 812E2!

And welcome to the newest additions to our Crew from Troop 353 Eastchester:
a.. Scouts Dan Alteneau, Joe Alteneau, Tom Sommer & Josh Wauchope
b.. Adult Advisors Steve Sommer & Richard Schraudner.
As of today we are 70 days from checking in at Philmont; precious little time to complete our preparations. But we will do it.

Our schedule for June is as follows:
a.. June 5 - 6 Troop 353 is at Clear Lake site 40 Regularly scheduled Troop activity An opportunity to meet our newest members at least for the day if not the overnight. Everyone, please advise me as to availability so transportation can be arranged. EVERYONE.
b.. June 7 First Aid / CPR training, 7 pm @ Ardsley Ambulance Corps Please contact Mr. Leslie if you wish to attend: jleslie@lakelandschools.org This is to satisfy the Phillmont requirement for at least one (1) person per Crew being First Aid and CPR certified. The cost is approximately $15.
c.. June 11 - 12 - 13 Troops 49, 28, 60 & 205 at Clear Lake site TBD Philmont-only activity This has been on our calendars for sometime now - everyone is expected to participate. I need responses from everyone regarding their participation. EVERYONE. As for T353: I am requesting you to participate on this weekend as much as possible only if we have the participation of the other Units. I will advise you as soon as I know this information. Food will be provided by each Troop - preferably backpackable foods requiring minimal preparation & cleanup (just like @ Philmont).
Our schedule for July is as follows:
a.. July 15 deadline for turning in your completed medical forms:
Guy Murtha, c/o Larry Ticker CPA PC, 109 Croton Avenue, Ossining, NY 10562
a.. July 22 - 23 - 24 - 25 Leave for Camp Read Thu evening & overnite @ Camp Read; after breakfast Fri head into Pharoah Lake Wilderness Area; hiking (maybe swimming) on Sat; return to Camp Read Sun (quick recap of the weekend & showers), then home. This has also been on the calendar for a long time so it is not a surprise to anyone. Everyone is expected to participate. EVERYONE. This is our final opportunity to iron out any problems before leaving for New Mexico. Your last chance to find out if your personal equipment is adequate. Or too much.
As far as the June schedule, I know some of you are thinking: "2 weekend in a row? That's too much." Well, this trip is a major undertaking that requires commitment on the part of everyone involved. All of you know the difference between being involved & being committed - bacon and eggs. The chicken is involved. The pig is committed. You are not being asked to overnite both weekends, just on one of them; for the other weekend all that is being asked is your Saturday.

The June campout(s) is(are) necessary to accomplish some objectives:
a.. Learn to work together as a unit - many of you do not know each other because you may have missed previous campouts or are brand new to the Crew.
b.. Select your respective Crew Leader - this will be the individual who will lead the Crew from here onward.
c.. Learn to erect a Philmont dining fly the Philmont-way.
This may not look like much but the first item takes time and time is a commodity you do not have.

I hope that all of you have taken the opportunity to read through the Philmont Guidebook to Adventure (that's the little booklet you were given some weeks ago, the one with the Tooth of Time on the front and back covers). Please refer to page 14, the item after "daypack for side hikes" in the YOUR PERSONAL EQUIPMENT list:

NO RADIOS, TAPE/CD PLAYERS, OR HAMMOCKS. CELLULAR TELEPHONES ARE DISCOURAGED.

This is Philmont's rule. If you have any questions, read it again. I will advise you to know the meaning of the word "confiscate" since this will be done if you decide to violate this rule. Now, I know each Troop has its own policy regarding the use of electronic devices on trips but in this instance there can be only one rule. Leave it home.

A note to the Adult Advisors: we should schedule a meeting to finalize:
a.. the Crew Rosters and arrange for the parental signatures on the Talent Release
  b.. travel arrangements
c.. what equipment we will bring with us & what we will checkout from Philmont
  d.. everything else
Everyone's personal and professional calendars are a nightmare - maybe Jun 12 would be the better choice? Please advise.

One last thing: Philmont palces a great emphasis on the 12th point of the Scout Law: A Scout is Reverent. To wit, in Base Camp everything shuts down from 7 pm to 8 pm for religious services. The Ranger will make a point of stopping the Crew before meals for the Philmont Grace: For Food, For Raiment, For Life, For Opportunity, For Friendship, We Thank Thee, O Lord. Amen.
Let's start now.

YIS
