RE: [Philmont]: Philmont Weather

Previously someone questioned my input on weather for Philmont.

Here is today's link for Eagle Nest which is located a very short distance west of the ranch at the western end of Cimarron Canyon.  http://weather.yahoo.com/forecast/USNM0097.html  The town is at a higher elevation than Cimarron and closer to Baldy than Cimarron.

Here is the link for Cimarron. http://weather.yahoo.com/forecast/USNM0063.html  Note the significant difference between the highs and lows.

Working from the NW to the SE corner and west to east you will see similar variation.   These sites give the best average conditions.   Base camp is equivalent to Cimarron and the AVERAGE backcountry especially west and NW closer to Eagle Nest.

You also need to adjust for elevation and the fact that lift can generate thunderstorms which are very local  especially later in the summer.

Tonite I would expect temperature below 30 degrees above 8000 ft.  At places like French Henry, Mt Phillips, or Cooper Park I would be expecting mid 20's.   Down near Rayado and base camp I would expect higher temperatures near the Cimarron forecast.  If I was heading to Baldy or any other high peak or ridge tomorrow I would get a very early start to avoid the isolated thunderstorms which are more likely to hit at 2 pm or later.

We've tracked this approach and it has shown to be very accurate over the years.
