Prior to my troop's first trek in 2002, I did a lot of homework. I read Backpacker mag for all advice and descriptions of tents, boots, stoves, purifiers, backpacks, etc. And it paid off.
With respect to tents, my husband (6ft 2in, 180lb) and I (5ft 10in, 180lb) fit comfortably in an REI Half-Dome Plus which weighs only 5-1/2 lb. That is a good deal heavier than many of the one-man tents available, but for two, it is not bad. And it is very inexpensive for what you get. We now use this tent exclusively because of the weight, the ease in putting it up, even alone, and the comfort. Additionally, several of our Scouts have decided to get one, and really seem to enjoy the ease of use. My husband will not be going this year, and I will be the only woman with our crew, so I got a one-person tent this year -- the REI Roadster. Everything including the footprint comes in at about 3 lb -- I love it!
