Taking burros will be the experience of a lifetime - nowhere else will you ever get the chance to do this. I have fond memories of doing it away back in my youth.
But (there are always some "buts") - you will be on "burro time" - gotta get them from the corral, pack 'em, travel at burro speed, and at the next camp, take 'em to the corral for the night. Another disadvantage for that particular part of the ranch is that with burros you must stay on the jeep trail from Ponil to Pueblano - but there is an alternate route over Wilson Mesa that hes gorgeous views of Mt Baldy (so gorgeous that one of the Philmont picture postcards has a photo from Wilson Mesa) - only backpacking crews can take that trail.

Subject: [Philmont]: burros
We are heading to Philmont at the end of the month where we will be taking trek #3. We are scheduled to take pack burros from Ponil to Miranda which I understand are optional. I am interested in hearing advantages/disadvantages with the burros form those with experience. We are a crew of first timers (both for Philmont and burros).
thanks,
Mark Miller
