[Philmont]: Short Treks

You can fill out the itinerary card and mail it to Logistics, who will plan your trek itinerary according to the choices you indicate.

Or, you can actually plan out your own custom itinerary and submit it to Logistics for approval. We did this in 2001 and also for 2004. Both time Logistics approved the submitted itinerary, without changes.

Either way, you should inform the Scouts as to the available program activities & sites at Philmont, then poll them as to their choices, and then lay it out on the planning map. Ideally, the Scouts should do all the planning but an adult may have to step in to complete (or hopefully, just assist in completing) the itinerary plan. This year the Scouts got bogged down with trying to modify a few of the numbered itineraries, so due to a lack of time remaining before June 1 it became necessary to step in. An adult advisor should work with the Scouts during the entire planning process - not do it for them, just work with them. You will be pleased with the enthusiasm they have from being this involved.

When it came to an either-or decision, it was given to the Scouts to decide (e.g., chuck wagon dinner at Clarks Fork, or sunrise on Shaeffer's Peak - they chose the sunrise; 2 nights at Miranda or through French Henry to Copper Park - they chose FH-CP). It is their trip. Give them the information and let them decide.

Just remember that the final laying out of the itinerary is more than just "connecting the dots" from camp-to-camp in order to get to the chosen program activities. You have to consider the terrain and the time available. Some of your days will be longer than the regular numbered treks, but that may be what it takes to give the Scouts what they want. It is work but well worth it.
