RE: [Philmont]: burros

I was thinking about your comment. I've never heard anyone debate
the advantages or disadvantages of rock climbing (shooting a gun,
participating in challenge events, or homesteading). Burros are a
program activity like everything else. Some folks like some and not
others.

I think burros get so much play on the list because during work-ups
we are so worried about the backpacking (mileage, pace,
conditioning). Once you get to Philmont, you realize that
backpacking is just a means to get from one program activity to
another.

It helps to have a conditioned, well trained crew too:-) It's a
little easier to take things in stride when night 1 is not the first
time your crew has strung up a bear bag or sumped their bowls.

I think the best thing is to look at burros as an unforgettable
experience rather than in terms of advantages and disadvantages.

Many great stores come from the burro experience. I've never
forgotten my first experience in 82 and I doubt my son has either.
