Re: [Philmont]: New Philmont CD

I received my copy of this CD (Philsongs II) in today's mail, and have
listened to it half a dozen times now. Some comments: This is a "live"
event, held at a PSA reunion in 2001 at the Rocky Mountain Scout Camp
(basically at the base of the Tooth of Time). So it's significantly
different than Philsongs I or the Tabasco Donkeys, or any of Rod
Taylor's compilations. The performers include Doc Walker (1st time he
had returned to Philmont in 19 years), Rod Taylor, Todd Conklin, Eric
Voss, and Warren Smith. Doc Walker, those of you who have Philsongs I
may recall, was featured on many of the songs on that CD.

Because the audience is primarily Philmont staffers, there is a bit of
an "insiders" feel to the album. But this is probably the closest to
the sound of a typical Philmont campfire of any the Philmont albums.

It has been my experience that each album has one or two songs that
stand out above the rest - for example, "Coal Tattoo" on the Tabasco
Donkeys, or "Boy of the Mountain" and "Running with the Wind" on
Philsongs I - where the musicians hit it just right. This album has one
such song, (not surprisingly) by Rod Taylor, called "Edge of Texas".
You can always tell a pro.... Another song, "Smokestack Lightning" is
also worth a mention. Oddly, I have never heard either at a Philmont
campfire, and I've been to at least 25 of them.

The album includes some very poignant closing remarks from Doc Walker.
All in all, I recommend the album for anyone who enjoys Philmont music.
