RE: [Philmont]: Hiking Boots

Don't forget that he already had 200+ miles under his belt with the boots
and a backpack, so his feet and ankles were in better shape than most of the
folks going to Philmont. I've road walked 16 miles with sneakers and a 50
pound pack and that was fine, but I personally wouldn't do it on the trail
with the philmont loads. I backpacked the 100 Mile Wilderness in Maine with
someone who hiked it in Sandals/bare feet, but I wouldn't try that either.
Unless some one backpacks all the time with sneakers, sandles or nothing at
all, I wouldn't recommend it either.

Subject: RE: [Philmont]: Hiking Boots

I ran into a hiker on the AT about 200 miles from completing the trail
wearing high top sneakers. This was in December. Said he started with
boots, had problems and switched to high top sneakers and they had worked
great for him. He just had to replace them several times as they did not
hold up as long as boots. Sneakers would not be my personal first choice,
but if someone can make 2,000 miles on the AT in them, I think a Philmont
trek would be possible.
