Our crew in 2003 travelled by train to Philmont. The eastbound
train arrives after 6pm, so we had to get there the day before
checkin (well, I understand Philmont may still check you in if
you come off the train, but hey, an extra day in PHilmont?
Didn't take much pursuading for that!).

The crew decided to take the Philbus from Raton to Philmont and
stay in the tents there, planning to pay for the extra breakfast.

Although we had notified Philmont of our crew's intention to
spend the extra night there, they were not prepared for our
crew. They first told the crew that they had to set up their
tents in the field. Just as they were about to do so, the
Philmont people came by and said the crew could use some of
the platform tents (outgoing crew tents, in this case). By
the time the crew got to sleep, it was pretty late. The crew
decided to sleep in rather than get up for the breakfast and
ended up skipping breakfast.

The crew was 808-J, so it was very late in the season and the
Philmont pholks should have had their act together by then.

Despite the misunderstanding with the sleeping arrangements,
the crew felt the situation was still okay, they only paid a
small amount for the accommodations and they had all day to
wander around after checkin. They were happy with their choice.

In summary, based on the experience of our crew, I would
recommend spending the extra night at CHQ rather than
spending the money on the St. James.
