I'd agree with David. If your troop is in the market to buy tents anyway (as
ours was due to growth), you have a lot of good choices available. There are
so many variables in choosing what goes into your crew's packs. Unless
you're an absolute minimalist on weight and don't care about the expense,
you can tolerate tents that are a bit heavier by just accepting it (it won't
make a major difference in your crew's overall trek experience) or perhaps
by trading off weight elsewhere.
Having said that, if you're going to buy some tents, here are a few to
consider. Our crew is using a combination of Eureka Apex XT (which we had)
and ALPS Taurus 2 AL (which we bought recently), both two-man designs that
weigh in around 6 pounds. The ALPS are pretty equivalent to the Eureka in
construction, and the price is sweet. (Normal 45% discount to scout groups,
even better discounts offered occasionally, see www.scoutdirect.com.) I love
the well-vented Eureka Timberline, which the Philtents are similar to, but
it's a pound heavier...regardless, a number of crews use them at Philmont.
The Timberlite is a smallish lighter-weight version. I bought an MSR Missing
link for our trek (the other advisor snores), at 3.5 pounds it's the right
weight, suitable for two and almost cavernous for one, but at $229 it's more
than I wanted to pay for a tent, and I don't think the expensive siliconized
nylon it's made from would stand up well to normal troop abuse.

Phil tents are just fine. Our boys have used them many times with no
complaint.

Subject: [Philmont]: Tents
I'm looking for recommendations on tents for Philmont. The Ranch supplies
tents that may be a bit heavy, but is a 2-3 pounds that can be shared
between tentmates enough to justify spending big bucks on a 2.5 lb tent. I
am leaning toward the larger footprint (and associated elbow room) of the
free Philmont tent. Based on the stove shipping dialogue ;) I don't expect
consensus, but all input is appreciated.
