== If you get there early, all sorts of good things are available: try to
book a tour of the Kit Carson Museum [run by the Scouts] - excellent and a
free bus is provided by the Ranch. Ditto, the Villa - those are important
tours that can only add to the experience - to fit them in without getting
there early would become a time problem. All of this is in addition to
what S. Calkins mentioned. Enjoy !

We arrived a day early in 2002. The boys had a chance to visit the Tooth of
Time Traders and get to know the base camp before the big push the next day.
Even got to meet our Ranger the evening before. It worked out great for us.

Subject: [Philmont]: Shipping Coleman XPert Stoves
Wow, I sure am ready to go to Philmont - July 2.
I am the guy who asked about Coleman stoves. Please remember Coleman XPert
stoves don't ship with any fuel or fuel tank. Jim Moss wrote, "It is
against the law to take any combustible or container that has ever held a
combustible on a commercial flight. It always has been against the law, 911
created the need to enforce it." An XPert stove is not a combustible or a
container. We buy the fuel and container at Philmont. I got the message to
ship the stoves to avoid any hassle. (I too am an attorney, the Department
of Homeland Security is my client. I know the hassles of that bureaucracy,
and I know not to mess with those guys or their lawyers.) My problem there
is that we are doing shake down hikes in June right up to our trip. We love
these stoves. I will figure it out. Thanks.
How about this question, can anyone recommend arriving at Philmont a day
early, sleeping there and buying an extra breakfast, as compared to spending
that night at the Saint James Hotel in Cimarron? We will arrive there about
7 pm. We received an e-mail yesterday from Philmont that almost encouraged
coming on in to Philmont, which has not been our prior practice. Arriving
at Philmont early would sure make check-in easy.
15 days -
Thanks, Tony
