Actually, he was not. He was carrying a full size Camprest Therarest, one
man tent, small butane/propane type stove, etc. Not over packed, but not
ultralight. I don't know what his pack weighted, but I would guess a lot
more than 30 lbs.

It's also likely that our AT friend is an ultralight backpacker who's
carrying
a pack that weighs less than 30 lbs. That puts a whole lot less stress on
the
feet that a typical Philmont pack of 35-50 lbs. The only way to get your
pack
that light at Philmont is to dump half your stuff on someone else :-)
