Just a note about early arrivals--

Crews arrive early every day. As others have said, there's a lot to do
around basecamp if you have the time. Early arrivals must be approved, but
this approval doesn't guarantee that platform tents will be available. If
there isn't space available in the tent city, you may be asked to pitch
tents in the "meadow" between trailbound and homebound tent cities. This is
a matter of logistics that vary from day to day-- for instance if tents are
needed for mountain trek crews from PTC or for Rayado crews. It's not
usually a matter of Philmont having forgotten that you were coming or
"having it's act together."
