I am attempting to review our trek (Trek 24) on the Philmont maps. Our
trek starting camp is Dean Cutoff. I understand that this unstaffed
camp was added in 2002 (after the most recent printing of the Philmont
overview and sectional maps), and therefore is not shown on the maps.
Although an internet search yielded a Philmont GPS waypoint website that
gave coordinates of 36-37-7.392N, 105-03-47.448W (see
http://home.comcast.net/~445philmont/philmontwaypoints.xls), the site
indicates that "waypoint is a guess." One of Dr. Bob's diaries
indicates that Dean Cutoff is on Ponil Creek, about halfway between
Ponil Camp and Flume Canyon Camp (which is consistent with the
coordinates). Can anyone confirm these coordinates or provide the
actual coordinates (or, better yet, provide accurate Universal
Transverse Mercator grid coordinates)? Also, is there a more direct
trail from Dean Cutoff to Rich Cabins than going through Ponil (i.e., is
there a "new" trail that is not shown on the maps? Thanks.
