RE: [Philmont]: Fuel Filter

A few months back John LeBlanc extolled the virtues of the felt insert in
the fuel funnel, which helped to filter out small amounts of water if it
happened to be present in the fuel. He also pointed out that the old-style
Coleman filter funnel with the felt insert was no longer made.

What is felt but matted wool? If you can sew on a button, you can make your
own insert from some old wool material. I made one for my funnel by folding
a hunk of tightly-woven wool fabric several times (might have been an old
blanket, it was just a scrap), sewing a circle a bit smaller than the
diameter of the funnel to hold the layers together, then cutting it to fit
snugly inside.

Does it work? Couldn't tell you...I never had a problem with contaminated
fuel before. But I feel better knowing it's there, quietly doing its small
part to prevent mayhem on our trek which is only 23 days away, yiha.

Bob and Stan, I have been looking for two months and can only find the ones
with screens in them, not felt.
