Make sure the doctor *clearly* understands the physical demands of the trek.
A second opinion by another physician would also be advisable. If both say he
is good to go, then so be it. IMO, let the doctors decide and keep the troop out
of it. I would not want the responsibility of making the decision, and it sounds
to me as though you don't want it as well.

Young people heal quicker, but, like you, I'm skeptical. As a parent, even if
the doc said it was okay, I would have serious reservations about sending my
son off on the trek wearing a knee brace.

I've no clue on the refund issue. Best bet is to find another boy (another troop
maybe?) to take his place, if it comes to that.
