I've watched Backpacker magazine completely endorse external frame
backpacks in their gear reviews for years. These experts, with a
bias for selling cutting edge stuff, still recognize that an
external frame can be equal or superior value for many backpackers.
External packs are not as good at rock scrambling, or bushwhacking.
Few Scouts are involved purposefully in these activities :-)
I did take a lesson in packing my external pack from my internal
frame peers. Everything goes into a container. Set up my tent,
toss in my sleeping bag, pad, and clothes (in a stuff sack).
Everything else stays in the bear bag or backpack. I'm much more
organized, and need fewer of the pockets external frame proponents
champion.
