Unfortunately, most of the places that Scouts purchase their packs from, such as sporting good stores, have a 16 year-old salesperson who have not been properly trained on how to fit an internal frame pack, leaving most Scouts with poorly working, uncomfortable gear.

Subject: RE: [Philmont]: The Comments about Internal and External frame backpacks are WRONG, MISLEADING, AND INCORRECT
Generally, I agree with Jim's post, though I think he's getting a bit more excited than he needs to :-) I did want to highlight a couple things.
I agree with Jim about fitting the pack. Makes all the difference in the world. I was *AMAZED* what a difference it made when Wayne Gregory fitted my pack to me.
I happen to believe Gregory makes the finest packs on the planet, they just cost too much for me. Dennis Brune's Alps Mountaineering makes a fine substitute.
Someone may argue that the need to fit the pack is another strike against internals since externals are just put it on and go, but I say hogwash to that, since the added comfort makes a world of difference. If you don't fit your pack, you'll hate it, and that may be where the reservations on internals comes from (though I think it is mostly just FUD - Fear, Uncertainty and Doubt).
I do, however, mildly disagree with Jim on the side zip. It is *slightly* more convenient, but it adds weight and a failure point that I find affects the longevity of the pack. Since everything of mine is packaged up (big things separate, but little things in their own sacks), it makes little difference for me having the side zip.
Regards
Don Roberts

Like a nice suit, you need to make sure the pack fits. External frame backpacks fit anyone because there is no fit to them. (By the way, the amount of surface pressure on your body is greater in spots with an external frame then an internal frame if you look at packs. You have stated a complete fallacy there.)
Packing tips: avoid internal frames with no side zip. If the internal frame only packs from the top, you are buying a potato sack
