As recently as March, there was a display on the evolution of packs on
display at the Seton Museum across the highway from CHQ. Maybe it is
still there.
When my oldest son went to Philmont in '84, his pack might have been a
3,000 CI pack. He used it again the next year too. Of course, crews
didn't have as much food then and there was an extra food pick-up day
when compared to now. Campers didn't take as much "stuff" then either.
Possibly more use of 8-day underwear too! In case you don't know:
Wear 'em 2 days
Turn 'em around for another 2 days
Turn 'em inside for another 2 days
Turn 'em around for another 2 days
Then, take 'em off and toss 'em in the fire. Oops, can't have fires this
year so Scouts will have to take 'em home to Mom. Or, do like one local
crew did several years ago, mail 'em home.
