Reading the comments pro and con about internal and external backpacks, I
recalled my son's first backpacking experience as a brand new scout- a 3 day trip
covering only 9 miles - but with an external frame backpack, I learned later,
was built for a 6 footer. Sold to an ignorant Mom by an uninformed young
salesperson. Fortunately, this experience did not kill him or his interest in the
outdoors. It may have caused him to have less faith in his Mom's outdoor
wisdom, however! We have since learned a bit about packs and he has now hiked and
backpacked about 700 miles - so far. Next month it's Philmont or bust!
