Subject: RE: [Philmont]: Jerry's Question about Camp Whitsett
Our troop will be at Whitsett July 18-24, we were there three years ago.
It's summer camp, Jerry. It's not a backpacking kind of thing. We could
probably use a small day pack to carry some water, scout handbook and maybe
snacks and merit badge supplies. I assume he'll spend most of his days at
the trail to First Class stuff. Other than the altitude, hardly any
similarities to Philmont (it's a heck of a lot drier, for one thing).
Philmont folks make me laugh when they say "welcome to dry country." :-)
Get him a 36" duffle bag to pack everything in. Let him have fun. Get him
a 30 or 40 degree sleeping bag and don't forget to bring a pillow.
Otherwise, bring what he brings car camping (actually, just follow the list
Whitsett gives you). He's not eligible for Rugged-E yet, and you don't
generally bring a framed backpack to summer camp anyway. It's basically car
camping.
Don't let him forget to bring a pen :-)
Relax.

Re: Backpacks? My question as a new BSA father of new Boy Scout - who is
sending his son on his first away from home (and Momma) BSA summer camp for
a week. It will be at Camp Whittsett CA close to lake Isabella, in the high
Serrias/mountains (I think). (High altitude with hiking like Philmont) What
kind of back pack should I get for him and his first week long boy scout
camp in August in the high altitudes? Thanks in advance for your greatly
appreciate expertise! Yours in Scouting: Jerry D Bailey (all of our camping
up to this point has been family car camping for cub scouts)
