I have an orange plastic trowel that has survived 2 Philmont treks. As
previously noted, it does not get much use. That would be different if your
trek goes to the Valle.
Philmont supplies the TP. You pick it up at your commissary stops. Last
year our crew did not pick up enough at our first commissary stop. Then a
full roll fell into pilot to bombardier. TP conservation became an
interesting topic of discussion. At Hunting Lodge the crew asked the staff
for a roll and the staff made the entire crew work for a roll of TP. Then
they also gave us a big bag of potato chips. So, a TP situation became a
memorable part of the trek.

This is the second message that mentions a trowel. I have an orange plastic
trowel (forget the brand), but the previous message indicated that it would
be useless in Philmont's soil. So should I quickly upgrade my trowel.
Also, I suddenly don't recall if TP is Philmont issued. I usually take my
own on campouts, but in my effort of living up to my new mantra "less is
more" I took it out of my pack.
I'm shaking my head as I write this because the Philmont way is an
adaptation of normal backpacking; some things are done the same others are
not... some gear is the same, others are not. Anyway, I know when we hit
the trail all of this newbie fretting and worrying won't matter as we'll be
on our way!
