I remember a "Backpacker" underwear survey 2 years ago before my 2002
Philmont trek. The results of the survey. The majority of respondents
stated that they do not wear underwear, the second highest response came
from those who purchase shorts with mesh brief liners or wore synthetic
briefs and the minority, a very distant third, wore cotton briefs,
so-called "whitie tighties". I know I have personally been chaffed raw
by sweat-soaked whitie tighties. In one of those rarest of instances, I
vote with the majority on this one.

I found a pair of zip-offs on sale at REI a year or so ago. Made by
exofficio (see www.exofficio.com), they're 100% nylon and have built-in
mesh brief like a bathing suit. Unless they're on sale, they will give
you sticker shock. Light weight, quick drying, and long pants if/when
you need them. I didn't need the long pants at Philmont in July '03,
but had them just in case.

it is rarely if ever cold enough to require hiking in long pants. the
zip offs require separate underwear which, i assume, means regular
cotton jockey shorts for most people.
