For gear to bring on your side hikes - somewhere in the Guidebook to
Adventure are listed Philmont's "Ten Essentials":
1. Map and Compass, and the ability to read and use them.

2. Sun & Insect protection: Sunscreen, broad-brimmed hat, sunglasses, insect
repellent (DEET)

3. Water bottles filled with disinfected water: Minimum of 2 quarts per
person.

4. Rain Gear and Extra Layered Clothing. Preferably a breathable rain suit
with jacket and pants. Warm clothing should be wool or polypro or other
synthetic; cotton clothing is not suitable for retaining body heat ("Cotton
Kills").

5. First Aid Kit. Adequate to treat common injuries that may occur on a
hike, and including latex gloves for protection from blood-borne pathogens.

6. Matches. For building a small campfire, if necessary, for warmth, drying
clothing, or boosting morale.

7. Tell someone your Itinerary.

8. Extra Food. For energy and warmth.

9. Pocket Knife. A Swiss Army-type pocketknife with several tools is
recommended.

10. Watch. So that you can stick to the schedule / itinerary.
