We were expedition 612A on Trek 22 and had mosquitoes something fierce until our first day at Beaubien (including on Mt. Phillips, but they were really slow up there). It cooled off our second day at Beaubien and stayed pretty cool the remainder of our days and we had very little problem with them after that. We had heard that they were terrible at Abreu, but when we got there, they were not. But again it was pretty cool. I would take some repellant just in case, or plan to wear long clothing. Philmont had a pretty wet spring and there are lots of mosquito breeding places.

Carson Meadow - It does not show up on my overall map or my South Sectional that I purchased through TOTT (Tooth of Time Traders) over the winter. However, we picked up a second set of Sectionals at TOTT so we would have 2 on the trail. both are dated as "revised 2003", however the second set shows Carson Meadow Camp. Our Navigating scout got to keep that set. I called him and he told me it is slightly to the west of UTM Easting 498000 and a little south of Northing 4025000. It is on the trail which heads SSE from Old Abreu. I would suggest getting a new sectional at Base Camp just so you have the latest and greatest.

  Subject: [Philmont]: Re: Carson Meadows

First of all congratulations to all who have had the good fortune to complete their treks successfully this year. Especially appreciated is all the current scoop on water, wildlife and weather! Forewarned is forearmed, as in the case of whether to tote the DEET or not!
Our crew has a question that may have been answered in previous missives, but we may have missed it. Can anyone enlighten us as to where EXACTLY Carson Meadows is? It is not on any of our maps and is on our itinereary for day 3 (Trek 11). Any assistance would certainly be appreciated!
