I forgot to ask, have you had the knee checked by a sports medicine
expert? It's possible you have a minor tear in a ligament, or chips, or
spurs, or something else, that is trivially fixed. They are able to do
amazing things now with arthroscopic surgery, with minimal invasiveness
and very short recovery times. Discuss with your physician and get
referred to someone who really knows what they're doing.
