I would add that its not just the minor stuff that can be fixed now. We do
plenty of knee, hip and shoulder replacements, often returning these people
to fully functional status. A friend of mine in my council had bilateral
knee replacements last fall and will be going to philmont this summer for a
trek. He's actually in much better shape than the last trek he made two
years ago on his bad knees.

I forgot to ask, have you had the knee checked by a sports medicine
expert? It's possible you have a minor tear in a ligament, or chips, or
spurs, or something else, that is trivially fixed. They are able to do
amazing things now with arthroscopic surgery, with minimal invasiveness
and very short recovery times. Discuss with your physician and get
referred to someone who really knows what they're doing.
