Scott,
Both times I went to Philmont I was prediabetic and inclined to occasional
asthma. Whatever "flavor" of asthma I have responds well to early primatene
mist intervention which completely stops the attack. The prediabetes was an
issue from the standpoint that diabetics fatigue easily, largely because the
blood glucose which supplies energy is not metabolised correctly.
But exercise is actually good therapy for this condition.
On the treks I did, first as an Explorer Scout (1965) and later as a Crew
Advisor (1978), I found that I had no difficulty. At times I was hot and
tired -- challenged certainly -- but had no difficulty. Keeping well
hydrated through regular consumption of water was one reason. Both times I
was fortunate to be on treks which were challenging but were not in the
super strenuous category.
It's still my judgment that you will do fine, but check with a physician who
specialises in sports medicine to get professional advice.
It's worth keeping in mind that the Philmont Training Center offers
excellent programs which do not involve taking a trek at all and would allow
you to see Philmont.
I still think you can have a good trek experience as long as you level with
the crew you are accompanying about your issues and they and you work
together as a team. Real Scouts will have no problem doing that.
