During the training hikes for our 2004 trek, I tried out a bunch of
different lightweight camp seating arrangements. I was trying to find the
best balance between weight and comfort. I tried the conversion seat for the
Therma-Rest, a standard Crazy Creek (tall), and a three-legged stool. Each
had its plusses and minuses, but in the end I couldn't justify the extra
weight. Every time I wasn't looking, stuff at home would quietly jump into
my pack and it would balloon to 60 lbs, so it took constant vigilance to
keep it down to a reasonable weight. I ended up taking the garden kneeling
pad, the lightest of any of them.
What I didn't count on was that between putting on the miles on our
super-strenuous trek, and all the great activities at Philmont, there was
precious little time to actually sit around. Even the butt pad got
relatively little use.
In so many ways the KISS philosophy leads us to the right choice. (But I'm
going to try out the Sling-Light anyway...only 398 days until our 2006
trek!)

Subject: RE: [Philmont]: Creature Comfort
Maybe I'm the odd man out, but I debated whether to bring some sort of chair
and didn't bring anything. I found that I didn't miss one at all. There was
always a cozy log, patch of dirt, or rock to rest on when I needed to. Try
what you think you might need on your shakedowns, you may come to the same
conclusion I did.
