I have to second this post. A foam pad is great to sleep on for two
reasons. First, it insulates you from the ground, allowing you to keep warm.
Second, it cushions you from the hard ground and acts as a sort of
mattress, allowing you to get a better night's sleep.
The idea of using it also as a sitting pad is a great idea. If you use it
as such you then don't have to carry something extra to sit on. A real plus
for Philmont backpacking.
