Scott,
As someone who has hike many miles of the AT in New England, let me assure
you that Philmont (02 & 04) is easier, (once you get past the altittude
differences).
The good news is that you have plenty of time to get in shape.
A couple of suggestions:
1) try out a pair of trekking poles and learn how to use them
2) keep your pack weight down to 30% or less of your body weight.
3) I know its tough to do as an advisor, but bring only your own gear, and
no backup gear for your youth members
4) your hike sounded almost too agressive this early in the training: Keep
weekend hikes at around 5-8 miles a day
5) put your pack on two days a week and hike locally (we have a great place
at our local scout camp) - try to keep you pack weight to 20% of your body
weight (jugs of water work fine)
If you need a list of great training hikes around NE - Drop me an email and
I'll share my list that we used for our two recent philmont expeditions.
Regards,
Tom Fitzpatrick

Subject: [Philmont]: How tough is it?
Date: Tue, 31 May 2005 21:37:17 -0400
I'm planning my first Philmont trip for next summer ('06). This past
weekend I did about 14 miles (11 miles- day one and 3 miles day 2) along the
Appalachian Trail over very mountainous conditions (Connecticut into
Massachucetts) with a full pack. Although my musceles still ache 3 days
later, I'm more concerned about my knees; which didn't too to well either.
I'm not over-weight. Should I expect Philmont to be as tough, or tougher.
How can I best condition myself, short of a knee replacement, or should I
give up on my dream of Philmont?
