Not sure what you are counting in 20 pounds. The water you mention is 4
pounds alone, not including the bottles/bladder. My sleeping bag is very
light, but close to a pound and 1/2, pad is another 14-16 oz. It all adds
up and, if you have everything you need, I think you will be 28-32 pounds
before crew gear and creature comforts. Ultralighters notwithstanding, 20
pounds is a pretty incredible number. 38 actually sounds reasonable. 30%
of me is about 55 pounds and I carried that on several of the days.
Remember, you will need 3-4 liters water on non-dry camp days. More if it's
hot and dry that day or if you are hiking in the open.

Subject: [Philmont]: Re: Bears and Pack weight
It would be a shame to waste a perfectly good bear due to the inability of a
scout or crew to follow the PSR bear guidelines.
So with that being said I was wondering what is a good weight to start with
for your pack. This would include personal gear, sleeping bag, clothes,
pad, 2 liters of water etc. Someone posted an initial weight of 38 lbs
before food/crew gear and I thought that was excessive. I am looking at @
20 lbs. Add-ons like sling chair, trekking poles etc excluded.
Thanks
