Re: [Philmont]: Pack weight

Using my standard equipment list, our Crew members come in at a range of
18 pounds for the smallest Scouts to 26 pounds for the largest Scouts
and adults.

That is just the personal kit - canteens empty, no Crew gear or food,
and minus one set of hiking clothes and boots (which, of course, we're
already wearing).

This equates to a fully loaded weight range of 30 pounds/smallest to 40
pounds largest when we hit the trail. My lowest average Crew weight was
just under 34 pounds per man, and my highest was just over 39 pounds per
man.

Note that these weights use our personal Crew gear (not Philmont's), but
also include a significant number of optional items. If we went really
hard core, with nothing but the bare minimums, we would come in about 5
pounds less per man. IMO, as a result we would also have a much less
enjoyable trek.

Remember that weight is only part of the equation. Proper fitting of
backpacks is a *critical* aspect to handling weight, and proper physical
training is (if anything) even more critical (e.g., I finished my
morning workout about 30 minutes ago, and have been doing 2-a-days since
May 12th (since I'm a 712 Crew)). Proper hiking protocols are also very
important.
