Not sure what you are counting in 28-32 pounds, but the 20 sounds about
right to me.

My pack, bag, pad, tent, ground cloth, clothing, eating gear, personal gear
and ten essentials, without water, food, or crew gear, comes in at 24 lbs.

Add 3 liters of water at about 6 lbs, my share of crew gear at about 5 lbs,
and I'm up to 35. Add the ration of Philfood and I'm still at about 40 on
the trail at Philmont.

That is not counting what I am wearing, at about 5-6 pounds.

Maybe it would be a good time for some of us to list specific items and
weights and see what the differences are. If I carried 55 lbs on the trail,
my knees would not be able to take it. I don't want to even talk about
carrying 30% of me, that would kill me :-(. That would be about 66 lbs!

Not sure what you are counting in 20 pounds. The water you mention is 4
pounds alone, not including the bottles/bladder. My sleeping bag is very
light, but close to a pound and 1/2, pad is another 14-16 oz. It all adds
up and, if you have everything you need, I think you will be 28-32 pounds
before crew gear and creature comforts. Ultralighters notwithstanding, 20
pounds is a pretty incredible number. 38 actually sounds reasonable. 30%
of me is about 55 pounds and I carried that on several of the days.
Remember, you will need 3-4 liters water on non-dry camp days. More if it's
hot and dry that day or if you are hiking in the open.

So with that being said I was wondering what is a good weight to start
with for your pack. This would include personal gear, sleeping bag,
clothes, pad, 2 liters of water etc. Someone posted an initial weight of 38
lbs before food/crew gear and I thought that was excessive. I am looking at
@ 20 lbs. Add-ons like sling chair, trekking poles etc excluded.
