RE: [Philmont]: boots

Size of the boots is only partly at issue. Getting foot gear that fits and
"walks well" is important. You could have two pairs of boots that are
nominally the same size and one pair could take care of your feet while the
other might not. Part of the equation is getting socks that "ride well"
inside the boot. In my experience this is a key issue to avoiding a rubbing
action which can cause problems.

It's interesting that the big toe on each foot appears to be bruised
underneath the toenail. Since it is happening on both feet it is likely a
shoe and/or sock issue. If you had a bruise due to an external collision it
is highly unlikely that it would occur on both feet simultaneously.

You might consider consulting a podiatrist or sports medicine physician to
get to the bottom of the bruising issue.

My guess is that something about the socks and/or the shoe is repeatedly
"pressing" causing the bruise. You might "flex" the shoe part of the boot
with your hand inside to see if there is a "pinching" action where your
bruised toes are. It's also possible the socks are "bunching" and then
"pressing" causing the problem.

You want to get to the bottom of this. Care of your feet is critical to a
successful Philmont experience.

As a temporary expedient you could put a bandaid around each bruised toe,
which could absorb the "pressing", prevent further injury and allow healing.
