>I have been getting into shape by hiking around my neighborhood for
four miles with a 40 lb. pack. After a few such hikes, I have noticed
that my big toe on each foot appears to be bruised underneath the
toenail. It does feel bruised when I push down on the toenail. Does this
mean that my boots are the wrong size for my feet? Never had this
problem before with boots....

Sounds like toe jamming and that can be related to poorly fitted boots.
Sometimes you can fix the problem with inserts and modifying the way you
lace your boots, but it's probably better to spend some time with a
qualified boot fitter.

I had a fairly new pair of boots that felt good in the store with a load
and tested on uphills and downhills. But they were too short and when
the sides loosened up a bit during a long backpacking day my feet slid
forward and the toe jam was severe enough that I lost the toenail.
Swapped for a larger boot and that took care of it.
