RE: [Philmont]: boots

I think the Backpacker magazine (or was it Outdoors?) had an article right
before the season last year about lacing techniques for boots. They had
several methods to alleviate many problems. A friend also showed me a
better double-knot which involves a normal lace know except "around the
thumb" twice instead of once. It works but it'd be heck to describe it with
any luck.
 
At any rate, I'll see if I can't find that article and report back here.

Hey, on lacing your boots, the normal way to lace up the boots is tuck the
lace under the hook. If you are having to stop and retie your boots, try
this. Instead of going UNDER the hook, go OVER the hook and then go under
the hook. Look at how the lace now has pressure on the lace. This will
keep your boots from getting loose. A guy at REI showed this trick to me.

Different question. I remember something from this list on lacing the upper
and lower parts of boots differently if you are going primarily up or down.
Seemed backwards at the time, so I wanted to get it again. I believe it was
loose (looser) bottom and tight (tighter) top to go down, and opposite going
up.
