RE Steve's observations on the Jansport Shoulder Strap issue.
Jansport has already taken steps to address the issue of the plastic
part failure on their shoulder straps. I have a Jansport Carson 90,
(Campmor/$89 with the scout discount) which I think is the best pack
I've ever had. But when I got it I started to hear about the straps
failing. I called Jansport and they sent two new ones with a grommet
and clevis pin to replace the plastic part. When the guys in my crew
tried the pack, 4 of them bought them and they came with the "improved"
straps already installed. If you have a Jansport with plastic tabs that
connect to the frame, call Jansport at the Warranty Service Center 1202
Shuksan Way Everett, WA 98203n Tel: 800-426-9227 and they'll tell you
what to do to fix it.
Andre has what I call a realistic pack list and has achieved a balance
of completeness and minimal weight. 25 - 30 pounds, with all of the
things you need to handle unique situations in the wild.
Going light is a great challenge to hone the outdoor skills of an
experienced backpacker, striving to carry less weight and still be able
to function with any trail situations. I admire guys who do that. But
going light sometimes entails decisions best left to an individual, and
not to a situation where the group could be negatively impacted by the
one person's decisions. Hypothermia brought on by inadequate gear
because the guy was trying to save weight is an example I use when guys
whine about the need to follow a pack list.
In our troop, the "Go-Light Guy" has a holier-than-thou attitude about
his commitment to saving weight and how we heavy guys are just not with
it. In some cases, the ultra-light guy makes decisions to cut weight
(no first aid kit except for blisters) because he knows the
non-ultra-light guys will have a complete kit. When we are in camp, the
Go-Lighter sure asks to use the stuff that the heavy guys bring along.
So the boys shoo him away from using the Xponent lantern ("You don't
need one, remember?"). He wonders why he is always given such a hard
time. One of my scouters is a Go-Lighter out of necessity due to back
surgery issues, but he so much wants to be with us on the trail, he does
whatever it takes; We are happy to help him out, and he is a voice of
encouragement and education to save weight without being a jerk about
it. Plus, he personally makes a lot of his stuff which we all respect
very much. But the 16 year old whose dad buys him every new ultra-light
product that comes out then gets in our face about how "fat" our packs
are...well, he's not held in very high regard by many of the other
scouts.
In Ranger School, the motto was "Travel Light, Freeze at Night". No
thanks. Been there, done that. As Sgt Peterson said, in the movie "The
Green Berets", "I'm not a Marine: I believe in my comfort!"
Remember guys...it's a technique.
