RE: [Philmont]: recharging batteries

Don't plan on being able to recharge batteries on the trail, most camps
don't have A.C. power. Some have solar power for communications and water
purification equipment, but that's about it.

If the camera uses standard (AA or AAA) form batteries, use non-rechargeable
lithium batteries in place of the rechargeables, the lithiums will last
longer.

I'd take several sets (1 set in the camera, 1-2 for backup) and, as others
have suggested, use battery conservation methods like turning off the LCD
display. I'd also buy a set and test operation/battery life before you go,
that will help estimate how many sets of extra batteries you will need to
carry since they take up space and add weight.

FYI: The lithium batteries are a good choice for things like GPS receivers,
too. I use them in my Magellan SporTrak and get about double the advertised
battery life from them.

I'm planning to bring a compact digital camera to Philmont, and the
battery life is rated at about 150 pictures. Will there be 110V power
available at staffed camps so I can recharge, or should I bring a backup
battery (or two)?
