RE: [Philmont]: Valle Vidal questions

There are no cables or sumps in the Valle. Greenwood Canyon is not a
camp like on Philmont property. You just find a place to camp in the
general area. Your ranger will show you how to build a wilderness sump.
Basically a pile of rocks that you pour the water over, then you scatter
the rocks to disperse the smell. You will have to carry an extra rope
to create your own bear bag cable.

If you are hiking towards Copper Park I suggest that you do not stop at
the first camp sites you see. If you hike on up into the canyon you
will see a nice area between two streams. It is well away from any
other camp sites. And you will be closer to Copper Park the next
morning than if you stop at the sites lower down.

Subject: [Philmont]: Valle Vidal questions

I have a few questions about the Valle Vidal area.
We received the new sectional maps Friday.
On the new sectional map Greenwood Canyon show no camp.
Since there are no permanent structures allowed in this area, are there
bear
cables and sumps?
The trail from Greenwood to Copper Park: there seems to be a trail but
it
goes off the map. Has anyone on this list hiked this trail? If so, any
suggestions?
It looks daunting with elevations stating at 8,400 ft climbing to 11,400
ft
then back to 10,600.
